Finding a good deal on car insurance can be a difficult task – but for anyone with a drink driving conviction on his or her record, the process can seem nearly impossible.
Drink Driver Insurance
Even after you’ve paid your fines and served your driving ban, many insurance companies may refuse to sell you cover for drink driver insurance – or they’ll give you a quote that is incredibly expensive. All of this can be problematic for anyone who relies on their car to get them from place to place, as well as those who simply enjoy spending time behind the wheel.
That’s why GSI Insurance Services (Southern) Ltd has put together an insurance offering designed specifically for those who have had a drink driving conviction. You’ll be surprised at how low our premiums can be for convicted drivers on drink driver insurance, and you can earn a discount by completing a drink driving rehabilitation course.
The different types of drink driving endorsements
There are nine different types of endorsements that could be added to your driving licence due to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Each endorsement has a code number and carries with it a certain number of penalty points – although many endorsements have a range of points that can be added to your record.
DR10 – Driving or attempting to drive with an alcohol level above the legal limit (3-11 penalty points).
DR20 – Driving or attempting to drive while unfit due to alcohol (3-11 penalty points).
DR30 – Driving or attempting to drive and failing to provide a specimen for analysis (3-11 penalty points).
DR40 – In charge of a vehicle with an alcohol level above the legal limit (10 penalty points).
DR50 – In charge of a vehicle while unfit due to drink (10 penalty points).
DR60 – Failure to provide a specimen for analysis in circumstances other than driving or attempting to drive (10 penalty points).
DR70 – Failing to provide a specimen for the breath test (4 penalty points).
DR80 – Driving or attempting to drive when under the influence of drugs (3-11 penalty points).
DR90 – In charge of a vehicle when unfit due to drugs use (10 penalty points).
Penalty points may stay on your driving record for four or 11 years, and if you build up more than 12 points in a three-year period, you may face a ban.
In addition to the endorsements on your driving licence, many drink driving convictions include an automatic driving ban and you may be subject to fines or imprisonment.
Insurance for convicted drivers
With an estimated 80,000 people caught drink driving every year, and around half a million breath tests being carried out on an annual basis, there are plenty of people who are in need of affordable and comprehensive car insurance, but who have trouble finding something suitable due to the alcohol-related endorsements on their licence.
