As of the 21st December 2012, new legislation known as The Gender Directive was passed, meaning that insurers would no longer be able to use gender as a factor for increasing or discounting insurance premiums. The ruling was made by the European Court of Justice in line with the EU’s long term principles of equality, and we are waiting to see the impact this is going to have on the motor insurance industry as a whole, especially in connection with pricing.
Although it’s early days, it is expected that the unisex rates will fall somewhere in between the current male and female rates, but it has also been feared that female rates will increase to the same level as current male rates, with no decrease for males.
GSI Insurance Services (Southern) Ltd have a number of specialist schemes that will help soften the blow caused by The Gender Directive. With female drivers benefitting from, on occasion, 50% cheaper rates than their male counterparts in the past, they are likely to be the worst affected by sharp increases, and anything that can be done to help bring costs down will help all around.
