The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is working in partnership with Enfield Council to offer young motorists in the area a chance to improve their driving skills free of charge.
Open to 17 to 26-year-olds, the IAM’s Momentum scheme is designed to give novice and inexperienced drivers advanced skills that will stand them in good stead for their rest of their lives.
Launched on January 6th, the initiative is made up of two parts – an interactive online assessment followed by an on-the-road session where essential skills can be passed on.
It does not involve an examination and is open to all young drivers who are keen to develop a better understanding of the difficulties and dangers they can face on the open road, and essentially, to give them the confidence to know how to tackle these situations.
Momentum is designed to be a taster of the IAM’s advanced driver programme and can provide a significant boost to confidence for those who are new to driving. Once completed, the scheme could also help young drivers receive smaller insurance premiums for their vehicles in the future.
Cabinet member for environment at Enfield Council Chris Bond said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for young drivers in the borough to further hone their driving skills and make themselves even safer on the roads.
“Young people are more likely to be involved in car accidents and giving young people free sessions teaching them how to be safer on the roads will be beneficial not only for them, but for other road users as well.”
IAM chief executive Simon Best concluded the partnership with the local authority is a great example of how councils and voluntary organisations can work together to provide fantastic benefits without the need for sizeable budgets.
